Seasonal Emergency Information

When drier conditions and hard freezes occur in the area, it increases the probability for brush and forest fires.  The City of Deltona encourages residents to be careful in these and all times of the year.

The Fire Department has instituted a ban on the burning of all yard trash and the only permitted burning will be allowed after authorization is obtained from the Division of Forestry for major land clearing operations.

Residents living on larger tracts of land are encouraged to establish and maintain a buffer area clear of all vegetation that is a minimum of 30 feet around all structures. The probability of the Fire Department preventing a brush fire from damaging your structure is greatly improved if there is a 30-foot buffer.

Please be extremely careful when discarding cigarettes or other lighted material as well as cooking material.

Home Heating Safety Information

• Only buy heaters that have been rated by a reputable testing laboratory.
  
• Keep a three foot safety buffer around heater:  This means no children, pets, or flammable items within three feet.
  
• Never leave a heater unattended, turn the unit off if leaving the area or going to sleep.
  
• Never use a heater to dry clothes or blankets (remember: three feet of space around the heater).
  

• Never burn trash, cardboard boxes, or other debris in your fireplace.  Use only seasoned wood to prevent uncontrollable fires.
  
• Chimneys should be inspected and cleaned annually by a professional, licensed chimney sweep.  Damage or creosote buildup can lead to a fire in the walls around the chimney or fireplace.
  
• Keep a three foot safety buffer around your fireplace; no pets, children, furniture, or flammable products should be near the front of the fireplace.
  
• A mesh screen or door designed for use with a fireplace should be used to prevent embers or logs from rolling out of the fireplace and onto flooring.
  

• Always have working CO and Smoke detectors outside of sleeping areas and on every level of the house.
  
• Never use an oven, gas grill, or charcoal grill to heat your home.  Ensure that gas appliances are in good working order.
  
•  Some symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning include: nausea, flu-like symptoms, and headache.  Severity of symptoms depends on the age and health of the patient.
